A Civilian Flotilla Sets Sail from Switzerland to Gaza This Weekend
This weekend, a new humanitarian flotilla will set sail toward Gaza, carrying not only medical and survival supplies but also the voices of civilians determined to break the silence surrounding the ongoing siege. Among those leading this action is Dr. Hicham El Ghaoui, a physician based in Verbier and founder of Waves of Freedom Switzerland (WOFA), the Swiss delegation of the international Global Sumud Flotilla.
In an interview with Swiss broadcaster RTS, Dr. El Ghaoui described the flotilla as a “mission of conscience”, rooted in nonviolence and humanitarian values. “Doing nothing is not an option,” he explained. “Breaking the blockade is a necessity.”
Humanitarian Mission, Not Politics
The flotilla is entirely civilian-led and independent of political or religious institutions. Its objective is clear:
Dr. El Ghaoui stressed that the blockade has left Gaza with 97% of its water undrinkable, severe shortages in fuel and medicine, and widespread famine and displacement. “The world cannot look away,” he said.
The Swiss Contribution
The Swiss delegation will contribute several boats, including the “Heidi” and the “Wilhelm Tell”, sailing alongside international partners from more than 30 countries. Each vessel carries not only aid but also symbolic weight: a message that ordinary people, acting with courage, can pressure governments and institutions to end complicity in the siege.
WOFA embodies the principle that “we don’t talk change, we sail it” . Its volunteers—doctors, students, workers, retirees—represent the civilian voice of Switzerland in an international movement for justice and human dignity.
What If They Are Blocked?
When asked about possible interception or detention, Dr. El Ghaoui explained that the flotilla is prepared: international legal teams, human rights organizations, and media will follow the journey closely. “If we are stopped, the world will see who blocks humanitarian aid—and who dares to act,” he emphasized.
A Call to Action
The flotilla is more than a convoy of boats; it is a call for solidarity. Dr. El Ghaoui invites people across Switzerland and beyond to support in any way they can—whether by donating, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness. “Every voice, every act of solidarity, pushes our boats closer to Gaza,” he said.
