Waves of Freedom: Swiss Delegation Joins Global Flotilla to Gaza with Five Boats

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with over 2 million people trapped under blockade and enduring catastrophic shortages of food, clean water, medicine, and fuel. International organizations, including the United Nations, have warned that Gaza is “unlivable,” as civilians face famine, bombardment, and mass displacement.

Against this backdrop, Waves of Freedom Switzerland, the Swiss delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla, is preparing a powerful act of civil resistance. In an interview with TV5Monde, Dr. Hicham El Ghaoui, founder of the Swiss delegation, explained the urgency:

“This flotilla is not a symbolic action—it is a mission of conscience. We are carrying baby milk, water filters, and medical aid. Our message is clear: Gaza is not alone.”

At the end of this month, a flotilla of over 200 civilian boats from 40+ countries will set sail. Switzerland will participate with five boats, including:

• Heidi – the first vessel acquired through donations

• Wilhelm Tell – named after the Swiss hero of resistance

• Three additional boats, currently being equipped with humanitarian cargo

The flotilla’s mission is to break the 18-year maritime blockade on Gaza, to deliver aid, and to increase international pressure for accountability.

Civil society movements emphasize that this is peaceful, civilian-led action—a response where politics and diplomacy have failed. Volunteers on board include doctors, artists, students, and parents determined to stand for justice.

As Dr. Hicham underlined in the TV5 interview:

“The sea is our voice. The law is our compass. Gaza must not remain under siege.”
